Village laundries and corrosion
Many of the older houses around Shellharbour village have a laundry tacked onto the rear of the house, lit by a louvre window and with little else in the way of airflow. Damp, salty air lingers in a room like that, and a washing machine living in it slowly rusts from the floor up. The base frame and the screws holding the back panel go first. Inside, the earth connections corrode.
The earth problem is the one to act on. A machine that trips the safety switch now and then, typically as it starts to fill or winds up into a spin, has current escaping somewhere it shouldn't. Leave it unplugged until it has been looked at.
You can slow the rust. Leave the louvres open on dry days, wipe water off the lid or top panel after each wash, and leave the door or lid ajar between loads so the drum dries out.
Newer laundries, electronic faults
Up around the city centre, the laundry is more often inside the house and the machine is a front loader with a digital display. Those rarely die of rust. The calls we get from there are an error code that halts the cycle, a door that stays locked at the end, and a drain pump that hums without shifting any water. Write the code down exactly as it shows; our note on error codes explains why the exact characters matter.
Before you book, try the pump filter. Most front loaders hide it behind a hatch in the lower corner of the front panel. Lay down a towel and a baking dish first, because more water comes out than you'd expect.
Repair or replace
Most washers are worth fixing. The exception people least expect is a front loader with worn drum bearings. The bearings themselves are cheap, but on many machines they're pressed into a tub that was welded shut at the factory, so the only fix is a whole new tub assembly, and on an older machine that rarely pays. Which kind of tub yours has depends on the model, and the technician checks before giving you a figure, so you're never quoted for a repair you shouldn't buy.
Questions from Shellharbour
Is it worth repairing a washing machine?
Usually, yes. A failed pump, lock or valve is a single part, and fitting one costs far less than a new machine. It stops adding up when bearings fail on a sealed-tub front loader, or when the main control board is no longer made. You see the repair price before deciding.
Why does my washing machine keep tripping the power?
A washer that trips the safety switch is leaking current to earth, often through corroded earth points or water reaching a wiring connection. In older laundries near the harbour that is a common cause. Unplug it and have it checked instead of resetting the switch again.
What does a washing machine repair cost in Shellharbour?
We charge a flat $125 for the visit and the diagnosis, and that fee applies whether or not you go ahead. The repair is quoted separately before any work begins. Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Afterpay are all accepted.
