Smeg repairs in Shellharbour

A fair share of the Smeg calls we take turn out not to be faults. Freestanding cookers are sensitive to how they were put in, and around here a lot of them arrived with a renovation.

Half of these calls are about the install

Not a criticism of anyone's kitchen. It is just what the diary says.

Smeg freestanding cookers arrive in this area mostly as part of a renovation, and a renovation is a period during which a heavy appliance gets pushed into a gap by whoever happened to be there. That is when the problems start, and they don't always show up for months.

The three we attend most:

It is not sitting level. A cooker out of level makes itself known in ways nobody attributes to the cooker. Cakes rise on one side. Oil in a pan pools to one edge. On some models the door stops sitting square against the seal, so the oven bleeds heat and takes longer than it should. The feet adjust; it is a ten-minute job that people live with for years.

It has been pushed too hard against the cabinetry. These appliances need a specified gap around them, and when a bench run was built to the millimetre the cooker sometimes ends up wedged. Heat that should be venting has nowhere to go, and heat with nowhere to go finds electronics.

Gas that was converted, or wasn't. Cookers sold here can be configured for natural gas or LPG, and the burner jets are different. A burner that lights lazily, burns with a yellow rather than blue flame, or lifts off the burner cap is behaving like it is running on the wrong setup. Gas work is licensed work and this is not a DIY item, but it is worth knowing that the symptom is a configuration question and not necessarily a broken appliance.

When it genuinely is the appliance

The failures that repeat on the cooking side are ignition and heat control.

A gas burner clicking away without lighting is usually the spark electrode or the module driving it, and the most common innocent explanation is water — a burner cap replaced damp after a clean will click and sulk until everything dries out properly. Worth waiting a day before booking.

On the oven side, the pattern to report is the one where the light comes on, the fan runs, and nothing gets hot. All the accessories working while the heat doesn't is a useful signal, because it rules out a great deal in one sentence and points at the components that decide when the element runs.

And the cavity fan: if it has started to rattle or drone, that is a bearing, and it is worth doing while it is still just a noise. Left alone it eventually takes the motor with it, which turns a small part into a larger one.

The model plate decides the parts wait

This is the honest caveat on Smeg and it applies to the whole European mid-range.

Volumes here are smaller than the mass-market brands, so the parts network is thinner. Common consumables are ordinarily obtainable. Model-specific assemblies, fascias and electronics on something that has been out of production for a while are the ones that can take time or turn out not to exist.

The model plate is what settles it. On a freestanding cooker it is usually on the frame behind the door or low on the side of the cavity. Photograph it and read it out when you book. That lets us chase the part while the job is still being scheduled, which is the difference between a quote you can act on and a quote with a question mark hanging off it.

The $125 assessment is payable on the day, and it buys the visit and the diagnosis. If it turns out the cooker is fine and the install never was, that is what you will be told — you will not be quoted for a part you did not need.

Photograph the model plate before you call. On Smeg that number decides whether the part is a few days away or not available at all.
