Beach on one side, lake on the other

Warilla sits on a narrow strip with the ocean to the east and Lake Illawarra to the west, and appliances here cop it from both directions. Salt-laden air off the beach, humidity off the lake, and a lot of laundries in carports or under back awnings where nothing ever fully dries out.

The housing is largely older fibro and brick, and the appliances tend to be kept going rather than replaced. That's fine by us — most of them are worth keeping going. The exceptions are the ones where the cabinet itself has corroded through, and we'll be straight with you about that.

Fridges are the number-one call here

If your fridge is running almost constantly and still isn't cold enough, check the coils before anything else. On most fridges they're the black grid on the back or a coil pack underneath. Around Warilla they fur up with a mix of dust and salt residue, and once they can't shed heat the compressor never gets to switch off.

Cleaning them is a vacuum and a soft brush, and it's genuinely worth doing before booking a technician. If cleaning doesn't fix it, then it's a fan, a defrost fault or the sealed system, and the third one is where a fridge often stops being economic.

Washing machines in outdoor laundries

A washer in a carport or an open laundry is in a much harsher environment than the same machine indoors. Two things go first: the cabinet corrodes around the base and the detergent drawer, and the earth points corrode, which can start tripping the safety switch.

A machine that trips the RCD intermittently, usually on a fill or a spin, needs looking at rather than resetting. It's not a nuisance trip — something is leaking to earth.

Dryers through winter

Warilla runs its dryers hard from May to September, and that's when the airflow faults show up. A dryer that heats for twenty minutes then goes cold has tripped a thermal cut-out, and the cut-out tripped because lint choked the airflow. Filter every load, and check the vent hose hasn't been crushed behind the machine.
