Two very different Shellharbours

The village end and the city centre end may as well be separate suburbs as far as appliance work goes. Down near the boat harbour the housing is older, closer to open water, and the laundries are often a lean-to off the back with a louvre window. Up around the town centre the builds are newer, the laundries are internal, and the appliances are usually integrated.

That difference shows up in the callouts. Village jobs skew toward corrosion and age. City centre jobs skew toward built-in machines with electronic faults, where the awkward part is getting the appliance out of the cabinetry without wrecking a benchtop.

What salt air actually does

People hear "salt air" and picture rust on the outside of things. The damage that matters is further in.

On a fridge it's the condenser coils at the back or underneath. Once they're furred with a mix of dust and salt they can't shed heat, so the compressor runs almost continuously and still can't hold temperature. It's the single most common fridge call we get within a few streets of the water, and it's worth checking yourself before you book anyone: pull the fridge out and look. If the coils are grey and furry, that's your answer.

On a cooktop it's the rangehood — grease from inside, salt from outside, and a motor that seizes long before it wears out.

On a washing machine it's the cabinet and the earth points. A machine in an unventilated laundry two streets from the beach will corrode years earlier than the identical model at Albion Park. When the cabinet has gone through, the repair stops making sense, and we'll say so.

Ovens in the older village kitchens

A lot of village houses are running a freestanding cooker that came with a renovation twenty years ago. The common faults there are boring and cheap: a thermostat that has drifted so the oven runs hot or cold, or an element that has actually failed and usually shows a visible blister or break.

The one to take seriously is an oven that trips the safety switch the instant it's switched on. That's an element gone to earth. Leave it off at the wall — it's not a wait-and-see fault.

Dishwashers around the harbour

Water sitting in the base after a cycle is drainage nine times out of ten, and the filter and sump in the bottom unscrew by hand. Clear those before you call anyone; a dishwasher that won't drain walks through the order to do it in.

If the water goes but the dishes come out gritty, the spray-arm jets are blocked. Lift the arms out and hold them up to the light. What needs us is the stuff behind the panel: no heat, a door that won't latch, or a leak from underneath.
