A new wall oven is rarely just the price of the oven
This is the thing that most changes the repair-or-replace decision on Westinghouse, and almost nobody factors it in before they start shopping.
A built-in oven in an Oak Flats or Albion Park kitchen from the eighties or nineties is generally hardwired rather than plugged in. In NSW nobody but a licensed electrician can legally take one off the wall and wire another one back on, so a replacement drags a second trade onto the job whether you wanted one there or not.
Then there is the hole. Cabinetry cut-outs from that era frequently do not match anything currently sold. Sometimes the new unit is smaller and you're left with a gap and a trim strip; sometimes it is fractionally larger and someone has to cut into a cabinet that has a stone benchtop sitting on it.
None of that appears on the price tag. It is why a repair that looks expensive against a retail price often isn't expensive against the real cost of the alternative, and why we walk people through the whole number rather than the appliance number.
What actually fails on these
Westinghouse ovens are mechanically simple, which is the reason so many of them are still running after twenty-five years. The failures repeat:
- The temperature control drifting, so the oven runs cool or hot compared to the dial. Cheap to put right, easily lived with for years before anyone bothers.
- The fan motor bearing going, on fan-forced models. It is audible before it fails — a whine or a grinding that gets worse — and doing it early is cheaper than doing it after the motor cooks itself.
- A heating element that has failed to earth. You will know it, because the whole house goes dark the second the oven gets power. That one is not a wait-and-see: kill it at the switchboard and ring us.
- Door seals hardening off, which costs heat and even cooking rather than stopping the oven working.
Cooktops: one zone, not the whole unit
Cooktop complaints on this brand are nearly always localised — the front left has died, the rear one will not light — and localised is the cheap outcome. It means the top itself is sound and something feeding one position has given up.
What we chase depends on the top. Under ceramic glass the suspects are the heating coil for that position and the switch behind its knob. On induction, a position that runs happily for a few minutes and then quits is behaving like the electronics beneath it are getting too hot to carry on, which is a ventilation question as much as an electrical one, and it gets noticeably worse in February.
Broken glass is the one to stop using rather than work around. Once the surface is compromised, anything you spill has somewhere to go, and where it goes is down onto live parts.
The parts answer is better than you'd expect
The question we get asked most about this brand is whether anything is still available for an old one. Usually yes. Westinghouse has been sold here for so long, across so many models, that the ordinary consumable parts stayed in production or were superseded by something that fits.
Where it genuinely ends is a control module or a screen-printed front panel for something long out of production. Nobody makes a stand-in for those, so there is nothing to order and no clever workaround, and we say that rather than gamble your money on a part that might fit.
Fridges: it is nearly always the seal
The other Westinghouse we see plenty of is the fridge, and the cheapest fault on it is the door seal. Seals perish first along the hinge side, where they flex most. Once a seal stops gripping, warm air trickles in continuously and the fridge never gets to rest, which lands on the power bill months before anything in the crisper goes off.
The part costs a small fraction of a fridge, and it is the job most often deferred until the appliance cops the blame for something that was never its doing. If yours sounds like it never switches off, read this before assuming the worst.
