Mostly rangehoods, and mostly grease
Omega turns up in Illawarra project homes in enormous numbers — the estates that went up through Albion Park, Flinders and Blackbutt from the 2000s onwards were fitted out with them as standard. Which means the appliance is usually the builder's choice rather than the owner's, and the most-called-about item is the rangehood.
The thing worth understanding about a rangehood motor is that it very rarely wears out. It seizes. There is a difference, and the difference is money.
A motor that has worn out has done its life and needs replacing. A motor that has seized has been progressively glued in place by years of cooking grease drawn through a filter that stopped being effective a long time ago. The bearing hasn't failed; it just can't turn any more. That one is frequently recoverable — strip it, degrease it, put it back — and it costs a fraction of a new unit.
The way to tell them apart from the kitchen floor: a seized motor usually hums or buzzes when you switch it on without the fan moving, and it will often have got progressively louder and weaker over months before it stopped. Something that has died electrically tends to just stop.
Near the beach there is a second factor. Salt gets at the housing and the fixings from the outside while grease gets at the motor from the inside, which is why rangehoods die earlier here than anywhere else in the kitchen.
The filters do the work
Almost all of this is preventable. The metal mesh filters in the underside of the hood are what stop grease reaching the motor, and they are dishwasher-safe on most models. Doing them every couple of months is the entire maintenance regime.
Households that do it get a decade or more out of a rangehood. Households that have never taken the filters out — which, in our experience, is most of them — get considerably less.
Ovens: the ring, not the fan
The Omega oven fault we correct people on most often involves the fan-forced element. On a fan-forced oven the element is a ring sitting behind the rear baffle plate with the fan in the middle of it.
When the oven stops heating on fan-bake, the fan is what people hear stopping or not stopping, so the fan gets the blame. But the fan and the element are separate components, and the element fails much more often. An oven where the fan is clearly spinning and nothing is getting hot is telling you which one it is.
Extraction that has quietly halved
Distinct from a motor that has stopped, and much more common than people realise, because it happens slowly enough that nobody notices the day it changed.
A rangehood that has lost half its extraction is usually not losing it at the motor. The three places to look are the filters, the ducting, and the outside vent. Ducting in a project home is often flexible hose, and flexible hose kinks, sags, and gets pushed out of shape by anything stored in the cupboard above the cooktop. The external vent has a flap on it, and flaps get painted shut, blocked by a renovation, or colonised by something with wings.
None of that is an appliance fault. All of it presents as one. It is worth a look from the outside of the house before you assume the hood is finished — particularly if the extraction dropped off around the time anything else was done to the roof or the eaves.
The knobs, of all things
A small one, but we get asked. The control knob shafts on the older Omega cooktops and ovens strip out, so the knob turns freely and nothing happens. It reads like a control fault and it is a mechanical one.
Those parts have generally remained available, which is not something we can say about every discontinued appliance. It is a cheap fix on an oven that is otherwise fine, and worth doing rather than living with a burner you can only light one way.
