Two machines can wear the same badge and quote out completely differently. On Bosch, more than any other brand we attend, the model number is the first thing we ask for.
Read us the model number off the door rim before you describe the fault. On Bosch that one line decides half the quote.
On most brands that's so the technician can pack the likely part. On Bosch it's because the same complaint, on two machines that look identical from the front of the laundry, can be a small part and an hour of labour, or a repair we would talk you out of. The plate behind the door tells us which conversation we are about to have.
That is genuinely the useful thing to know about this brand, and it is worth more to you than a list of what a Bosch does well.
Bosch front loaders sold in Australia fall roughly into two camps. Older machines run a motor with carbon brushes — small carbon blocks that wear down against the motor's commutator and eventually stop making contact. Later machines dropped the brushes entirely and use a sensor to tell the control board where the drum is sitting.
A drum that will not turn is the same complaint on both. On the older motor it is very often just those brushes, which are an inexpensive part and a routine job. On the brushless machine there are no brushes to blame, so the same symptom points at the position sensor or at the board, and the numbers move a long way.
Nothing on the front panel distinguishes the two. This is why a phone quote on a non-turning Bosch drum is a guess, and we would rather not give you one.
Many Bosch washers use an outer tub moulded as a single sealed piece. On a machine with a split tub, worn drum bearings are a fiddly but ordinary job — the tub comes apart, the old bearings press out, new ones go in. A sealed tub cannot be opened, so the repair is a complete tub assembly with the bearings already fitted.
That part is a large fraction of what a mid-life washer is worth, which is why a rumbling, grinding drum is the fault we most often follow with a straight conversation rather than a quote. Our note on how we call repair against replace covers the way we work that out.
Bearing noise usually announces itself long before the machine fails. It starts as a low drone that rises and falls through the spin, and it gets louder over weeks. Ringing when you first hear it gives you options; ringing when the drum has seized gives you one.
Bosch dishwashers sit over a shallow tray with a float in it. Water reaching that float shuts the machine down and refuses to let it run — sometimes with the drain pump droning away on its own. At that point the flood protection has done exactly what it is designed to do.
It has also told you nothing about where the water came from. That is the part people find frustrating, and it is why we do not price this fault over the phone. The inexpensive version is a hose fitting that has been weeping behind the cabinet for a month. The expensive version is a heat exchanger that has split. Same lockout, same lack of clues, very different repairs.
There is a related trap worth naming: clearing the tray makes the machine run again for a wash or two. If nobody has found the leak, it comes back, and the second callout costs the same as the first. If a lockout has already returned once, mention that when you call — it changes what the technician looks at first.
The mechanical side of these machines generally outlasts the electronics, which means a Bosch in its middle years is normally worth quoting. The two faults that end the conversation are a sealed-tub bearing failure on an older washer and a dead control board on a machine that has already had a good life. We will say either one out loud before you spend anything beyond the assessment.
Everything we repair is warranted, we quote the job before touching it, and the $125 assessment covers the technician coming out and finding the fault properly. Domestic machines only — commercial kitchen gear is not something we take on.
