Different climate, different faults

Albion Park is the one part of our patch where salt isn't the story. Sitting back off the lake and rising towards the escarpment, appliances here last closer to their design life, and we see far less of the corrosion that dominates the beachside suburbs.

What we see instead is wear. Albion Park and Albion Park Rail have a lot of family homes running big loads: a washing machine going twice a day, a dishwasher running every night, a second fridge in the garage.

The garage fridge problem

Almost every second call out here involves a second fridge or freezer in the garage, and there's a fault pattern nobody expects.

Most domestic fridges are rated to work in ambient temperatures between roughly 10°C and 32°C. An uninsulated Illawarra garage sits outside that band at both ends. In February the compressor can't keep up; in July the thermostat may not call for cooling often enough to keep the freezer side down, so ice cream goes soft in a freezer that isn't broken.

If your garage fridge only misbehaves seasonally, it may not need a repair at all — it needs a different location, or a model rated for garage use.

Dishwashers running every night

A dishwasher doing 350 cycles a year wears differently to one doing 150. The parts that go are the drain pump impeller, the door seal at the bottom corners, and the heating element.

The one worth catching early is the door seal, because a seal that has stopped sealing lets steam into the control panel, and a control panel is an order-of-magnitude more expensive. If you can see water tracking down the front of the door after a cycle, book it before it becomes an electronics job.

Ovens in the newer estates

The estates out towards Calderwood and Tullimbar are running the same integrated appliance packages as Shell Cove — Bosch, AEG, Westinghouse and Smeg mostly. Pyrolytic ovens are common, and the recurring quirk is the door staying locked after a self-clean cycle. Twenty minutes with the power off at the wall clears a stuck lock often enough to be worth trying before you call.
