The brand we most often finish on the first visit. Supply into the Illawarra is good and the common failures are predictable, which is a better combination than it sounds.
Tell us the model and which drawer or which cycle is misbehaving, and there is a good chance the part rides out with the technician.
Two things have to line up for a repair to be done in a single visit: the fault has to be one of a predictable handful, and the part has to be obtainable. Fisher & Paykel is unusual in getting both right at once. The failure patterns repeat, and distribution into this part of the coast is solid, so the technician can back a guess before leaving the workshop and be right most of the time.
That is not a claim about the machines being better than anyone else's. It is a claim about logistics, and logistics is what actually decides whether you get your laundry back today or on Thursday.
Worth saying plainly, because it shapes everything about a DishDrawer callout. Each drawer has its own wash motor, its own lid mechanism and its own seal. When someone tells us "the dishwasher is leaking", the first question is which drawer, and the second is whether the other one still behaves.
Leaks here are seal work far more often than anything structural. The lid assembly seals the top of the drawer while it washes, and the wash motor has a seal of its own underneath. Either can perish. What people tend to suspect first is the drawer runners, and runners are almost never the source — they carry weight, they don't hold water.
The upper drawer of a double unit takes the harder life, because it runs more often in most households. If you have never had one looked at and one drawer has started weeping, it's usually the top one.
Fisher & Paykel's direct-drive top loaders — the SmartDrive family and what came after — have no gearbox and no belt. The motor drives the agitator directly and the control system works out the drum's position electronically.
The consequence is a fault that fools people. When the position sensing goes out of step, the machine can stop, refuse to agitate, or complain in a way that looks exactly like the motor has died. Very often the motor is perfectly healthy. Replacing it would be an expensive way to not fix the problem, which is the main reason we bother diagnosing rather than reading the symptom and ordering.
If your top loader has stopped part way through and the drum still turns freely by hand with the power off, that is the pattern we are describing, and it is worth mentioning when you book.
The older ActiveSmart fridges have a habit worth knowing. When ice starts building up on the rear inner wall of the fresh food compartment, the usual cause is the sensor that governs the defrost cycle rather than anything to do with the sealed refrigeration system.
This matters because "it's icing up" is a fault people expect to be terminal and expensive, and on these it usually isn't. A fridge losing refrigerant is a different and much worse story, but it presents differently — it runs and runs and never gets properly cold, which is closer to what we cover in why fridges run constantly this close to the water.
Older models are where the wait appears. Fisher & Paykel has been in Australian kitchens a long time and a machine from two decades ago can still be entirely sound, but a model-specific board or a moulded assembly for something discontinued is a different proposition from a pump seal.
We tell you which situation you are in while the technician is standing in your laundry, not after you've committed. If a part is going to take a while, you get that figure as part of the quote.
The $125 assessment is payable either way — it pays for the visit and the diagnosis, not for a guess — and anything we go on to repair is warranted.
