The builder chose it, not you

Walk through the newer estates — Shell Cove, Flinders, out to Calderwood and Tullimbar — and you'll find the same appliance package repeated street after street. Haier is a large part of that package, which means we see the same three or four models over and over, in houses of almost exactly the same age.

That has a genuinely useful consequence for you. When several hundred identical machines were installed within a couple of years of each other, they tend to develop the same faults at the same point in their lives. We know what is coming before we get there.

Before you book anyone: the handover paperwork

If the house is recent, dig out what the builder handed over. Appliances installed as part of a new build usually carry the manufacturer's warranty from the point of installation, and sometimes there is builder-side cover on top of it.

We work for ourselves rather than for Haier. Bringing us to a machine the factory is still standing behind can quietly void what you already have, and there is no version of that which ends well for you. In date, ring Haier. Out of date, use whoever you like.

The five-minute faults

A meaningful share of the Haier calls we take are things worth checking before spending anything.

A top loader that stops mid-cycle. Very often the lid switch — the small mechanism that reports whether the lid is down. These machines treat an unconfirmed lid as a reason not to spin, so a worn switch shows up as a machine that fills, washes, and then just sits there full of water. It is among the cheapest parts we fit.

A fridge that never stops running through summer. In these houses the fridge cavity is frequently built tight, and a fridge pushed all the way back with a cabinet overhead has nowhere to shed its heat. Pull it out, check there is air behind it, and give the coils a clean. More on that pattern here.

A heat pump dryer that has stopped drying properly. These have a second filter beyond the obvious lint one, usually behind a panel low on the front, and almost nobody knows it is there. Left alone it strangles the airflow, and the dryer will happily run the whole program and hand you back damp washing. Clean it and a good share of these calls never need to be made.

Same house, same laundry, same problem

The other thing repetition across an estate teaches you is which faults are the house rather than the appliance.

Laundries in a lot of these builds are compact, internal, and share a wall with the garage. A washer and a dryer stacked into a cupboard with a bifold door on it will run hot and stay damp, and appliances that run hot and stay damp age faster than the same models in an open laundry. It is not a defect and there is nothing to repair, but it does explain why the machine three doors down is on its second repair and yours isn't.

If yours lives in a cupboard, leave the door open while the dryer runs. That single habit does more for the machine than anything we could sell you.

Where it gets less cheerful

Haier occupies the price bracket where the economics can turn. On a machine where the fault is the main control board, the repair can land uncomfortably close to what the appliance is worth, and past a certain age we will say so instead of quoting.

That is not a knock on the brand — it is arithmetic, and it applies to everything in this bracket. The mechanical parts on these machines are inexpensive and worth doing; the electronics are where it stops. The way we work that out is set out here.

Around the newer estates

Shell Cove, Flinders and Blackbutt fall on a single run for us, and Calderwood and Tullimbar are barely further. Where someone is already working that pocket, same-day is often realistic.
