Tucked behind Shellharbour between the reserve and the beach suburbs. Quiet streets, established homes, and appliances that mostly just need a part rather than replacing.
The assessment fee is $125, fixed. A technician diagnoses the fault and quotes the repair before any work starts.
Blackbutt sits back from the water behind the reserve, which spares it the worst of the salt exposure the beachfront streets cop. Appliances here tend to reach a fair age before anything goes wrong, and when something does go wrong it's usually a single part rather than a machine at the end of its life.
That's the good news for anyone weighing up repair against replacement. In this suburb the repair usually stacks up.
The most common call here, and a decent share of them don't need a technician at all.
Water sitting in the base after a cycle is drainage. The filter and the sump underneath it unscrew by hand — a fruit sticker or a fragment of glass in the impeller will stop the pump dead. After that it's the drain hose where it meets the sink trap, which blocks more often in kitchens that also run a waste disposal. A dishwasher that won't drain has the order to work through.
If the water drains but the dishes come out gritty or filmed, the spray-arm jets are blocked. Lift the arms out and hold them up to a light.
What actually needs us: a machine that fills and drains but leaves everything cold (heating element or thermostat), a door that won't latch (catch or a dropped hinge), or a leak from underneath (sump, split hose or pump).
Mid-life front loaders dominate. The faults are the standard ones — a pump filter full of coins and hair clips, a door lock that won't confirm, a drain hose kinked behind the machine.
The one to check yourself before booking: open the door on an empty machine and turn the drum by hand. It should turn freely and quietly. Grinding or a rumble that changes as it turns means bearings, and that's the fault most likely to make a repair uneconomic on an older machine. Repair or replace explains where we draw that line.
Wall ovens and freestanding cookers in roughly equal measure. Thermostats and sensors fail far more often than elements do, and an oven that heats but won't hold temperature is almost always one of those two rather than something expensive.
We repair Westinghouse, Electrolux, Bosch, Smeg and Omega through these streets most weeks.
Blackbutt sits inside the Shellharbour run alongside Barrack Heights and Flinders, so we're through here constantly and same-day is often realistic.
