The one brand where reading the display down the phone genuinely changes the visit. Here is what the common codes point at, and where they mislead.
Read us the display and the visit changes
Samsung puts more usable information on the front panel than most brands manage. That sounds like a small thing. It isn't: it is the difference between a technician arriving with a likely part in the van and arriving with a toolbox and a theory.
So when you call about a Samsung, lead with what the panel is showing. Two characters is often enough to narrow the job from "something is wrong with the washing machine" to one of three parts.
What the common codes are pointing at
Codes vary between model generations and this is a guide rather than a service manual, but on most Samsung front loaders sold here the pattern holds:

Two of those five are worth trying yourself before you pay anyone. A fill fault is very often a tap somebody turned off, or an inlet screen furred up with sediment, and both are a two-minute job. An unbalanced-load complaint is usually a bath mat or one heavy towel sitting on its own — redistribute the drum and run it again.
What a code cannot tell you
The limit is worth understanding, because it is where phone triage stops being reliable.
A code reports what the machine noticed, not what caused it. A drain fault tells you water didn't leave in the expected time. That could be a coin in the pump, a kinked hose behind the cabinet, a failed pump, or a control board reading a working pump wrongly. All four produce the same two characters.
The codes that report a leak are the sharpest example. The machine has detected water in a place it monitors, which means the leak has already happened somewhere it does not monitor. The code is the end of the story rather than the beginning of it.
We say this because people occasionally ring having already bought a part off the internet on the strength of a code, and it is a poor bet often enough to be worth warning about.
Fridges: ice on the back panel
The French-door and twin-compartment Samsungs are common through Shell Cove and Flinders, and the fault we attend most on them is ice forming on the rear panel inside the fresh food side.
The mechanism is straightforward once you know it. These fridges make cold in one place and move it around with a fan. Something has to periodically melt the frost that builds on the cold surface, and when that defrost function stops happening the frost turns into a wall of ice, the air stops moving, and the fridge goes warm while the freezer stays fine.
Two things follow. The first is that this is a fixable fault rather than a dead fridge. The second is that "it needs regassing" — the diagnosis most people arrive braced for — is very rarely the right one. Sealed refrigeration systems do not consume gas the way a car air conditioner does.
Dryers, and the code that means nothing is wrong
Heat pump and condenser dryers are the newer part of the Samsung range around here, and they generate a specific kind of call: the machine reports a problem, the owner reads it as a fault, and the machine is in fact telling them to clean something.
These dryers depend on air moving freely through a heat exchanger, and the exchanger is behind a panel that most owners have never opened. When it silts up with fine lint the drying performance falls away first and the complaint appears second. The filter you can see is not the whole story.
There is a real fault underneath this pattern, and it is worth knowing which is which. A dryer that tumbles, gets warm, and still hands back damp washing when the program finishes is almost always airflow. A dryer that tumbles and never warms at all is a different animal — that is a heating fault, and it needs a technician.
Where the money goes
The pattern on this brand is that the mechanical parts are cheap and the boards are not. Pumps, filters, seals, valves and door catches are ordinary jobs on an ordinary machine.
Main control boards are the fault that ends conversations, and they end them faster on a machine that is already well into its life. When we get to that point we say it plainly at the assessment rather than quoting you something you'd regret. The way we weigh it up is in more detail here.
Worth saying, because we get asked: we work for ourselves, not for Samsung. On a machine still young enough to sit under factory warranty, Samsung's own channel is the one to use — an outside repairer touching it while it is covered can undo that cover, which is a bad trade for a job we would have been paid for anyway.
