If your Warilla kitchen is one of the older ones, the dishwasher may well have been slotted in after the cabinets went in, or it may be a freestanding machine sitting on vinyl or laminate. These machines are usually worth keeping going, and their faults are mostly simple: a door that won't latch so nothing starts, a drain pump that's blocked or worn, or a leak from the inlet hose or the door seal.
When it won't start
Rule out the basics first: the power point, the safety switch in the meter box, and the child lock, which on some models is set by holding a button for a few seconds. Then shut the door firmly and listen for the click; a latch that doesn't register stops the machine before it begins. Dishwasher won't start runs through the full list.
Leaks need quick attention in an older home, because water soaks into particleboard cabinets and lifts floor coverings before you notice. If water appears at the front edge or under the machine, turn off the tap under the sink and give us a call. The technician will check the hose, the seal and the sump, and tell you straight whether the machine deserves a repair. The $125 fee covers that visit, and the price of the fix comes before any work.
Westinghouse, Electrolux, Beko and Euromaid are among the brands we're authorised for. A machine that leaves a small puddle only on some cycles often has a door seal that has shrunk with age, or a spray arm cracked so it throws water straight at the door edge, and both are cheap parts.
Older under-sink plumbing can slow a dishwasher's drain too. If the sink itself empties sluggishly, the shared waste is probably part-blocked, and that is a plumber's job. If the sink drains freely and the dishwasher still holds water, the fault is inside the machine and it's one for us.
Questions from Warilla
Why won't my dishwasher start?
Check the power point, the safety switch and whether a child lock is on. A worn catch that no longer grabs when you close the door is the part that fails most. If the display shows a code, note it down before you call.
How do cockroaches get into a dishwasher?
They come in through gaps around the hoses and the base and shelter in the warm space under the tub. Food left in the filter draws them in. Keep the filter clean, run the machine regularly and seal any gaps where the pipes pass through the cabinet.
Is an older dishwasher worth fixing?
Often, because latches, pumps and hoses are not expensive parts. It becomes doubtful if the tub has cracked or the control board is no longer made. You get an honest view at the assessment.
