Oven Repairs in Shellharbour Village

Shellharbour ovens range from twenty-year-old freestanding cookers in the village to wall ovens in the newer streets, and we repair both.

The freestanding cooker in the village

Plenty of houses near the village had their kitchens redone a couple of decades ago, and the freestanding cooker that went in then is often still there. These are simple machines and well worth repairing. Most of what goes wrong with them comes down to two parts.

The thermostat can drift with age, so the dial no longer matches what's happening inside. You notice it as cakes scorched at the edges, or a roast that takes an hour longer than the recipe says. A cheap oven thermometer left on the middle rack for a quarter of an hour at a known setting shows which way it has drifted and by how much.

The element is the other. When a bake or grill element dies, you can often see it: a bubble in the metal tube, a crack, or a patch that has gone dull and scorched. Look for it with the oven cold and switched off.

Power cutting out when the oven goes on

If the safety switch drops the moment you turn the oven on, an element has most likely broken down internally and is leaking to earth. Leave the oven off at the wall isolator until it's been fixed, and resist resetting the switch to try again. When the oven takes out the power explains what's going on and what to check at the switchboard.

It's usually a straightforward job: a new element, a test, and the oven is back in use.

Cracked or fogged door glass

Cookers in a busy kitchen take knocks, and the door glass is where it shows. The inner pane can crack when a cold splash hits hot glass, and on some models grease and moisture work their way between the panes, leaving a haze you can't clean off from outside. Most doors come apart for cleaning or repair, and inner panes for the common models can be ordered by model number. A rattle from the outer glass usually means a loose screw along the top trim.

We hold authorised status for Westinghouse, Smeg, Omega, Euromaid and the other main oven brands. Getting it diagnosed costs a fixed $125, and you see the repair figure and say yes or no before any work begins.

Questions from Shellharbour

Why is my oven not heating up?

On an electric oven, a burnt-out element is the usual cause, often visible as a blister or break in the metal. If it heats but slowly or unevenly, the thermostat may have drifted. Both are routine repairs.

Why does my oven trip the safety switch?

An element that has broken down inside its sheath can leak current to earth, and the safety switch cuts the power to protect you. Turn the oven off at its isolator and don't reset the switch again until it has been checked. A new element usually fixes it.

Is it worth repairing an old freestanding oven?

Usually. Elements, thermostats and switches for the common freestanding models stay available for years, and they cost a fraction of a new cooker. If a part has been discontinued, we will tell you at the assessment.
