Induction tops that cut out mid-cook
An induction cooktop that switches itself off partway through dinner is usually overheating. Under the glass there's a cooling fan that draws air from the space beneath the benchtop. If that fan fails, or the gap under the cooktop is blocked by a drawer packed too high, the electronics run hot and the cooktop shuts down to protect itself. Downdraft extractors and ducted rangehoods can add to it, drawing heated air past the fan inlet.
Because it comes and goes, people tend to assume a serious electrical fault. Most of the time it's a fan or an airflow problem, which is much cheaper to fix. Before you book, check the drawer under the cooktop. If tall items are pressed against the base of the unit, clear them and see whether the cut-outs stop.
Wall ovens that stay in the cabinet
Wall ovens are held into the cabinetry with screws through the side frame, and most repairs can be done without taking the oven out: elements, the convection fan, door seals, lights and the thermostat or sensor. The oven only comes forward when a control board or the wiring at the back needs work, and that takes two people and some care with the surrounding joinery.
The model plate sits on the door frame, visible with the door open, or behind the warming drawer if you have one. A photo of it when you book lets the technician bring the right element or seal.
Steam and combination ovens
If yours is a steam or combi oven, the faults look different. Scale builds up in the water tank and the steam generator, so cycles fail or the oven throws a descale message that won't clear. Running the descaling programme as the manual sets out keeps most of this away. When the generator or a pump has failed, it's a part replacement, and Bosch, AEG, Smeg and Westinghouse are all brands we're authorised to repair in warranty and out.
Questions from Shell Cove
Why does my induction cooktop keep turning off?
Most often it is overheating because the cooling fan has failed or the air gap under the bench is blocked. Clear anything pressed against the underside and see if it settles. If it keeps cutting out, the fan or a temperature sensor needs replacing.
How much does an induction cooktop repair cost?
The assessment is a fixed $125, covering the callout and diagnosis. The repair is quoted once the fault is found and before any work starts. Many induction faults turn out to be fans or sensors rather than the glass or the main board.
Does my wall oven have to come out for a repair?
Usually not. Elements, fans, seals, lights and thermostats can be reached with the oven in place. It only needs to come forward for work on the rear wiring or some control boards.
