A dishwasher added to an older kitchen
Oak Flats houses from the sixties to the eighties weren't usually built with a dishwasher in mind. Where one has been added, it often shares the sink cupboard with older taps and fittings, and the drain hose may be connected in whatever way suited the cabinet at the time. Two problems come out of that: slow filling, and poor drainage or dirty water creeping back in from the sink.
Slow to fill, or not filling at all
If the machine hums, flashes an error, or takes ages to start washing, check the tap under the sink is turned fully on. Older taps can seize partly closed, and the inlet hose behind the machine can kink when it's pushed back into place. A small mesh screen inside the hose fitting can also block with grit. Dishwasher not filling with water walks through each of these. When the supply is fine and it still won't fill, the inlet valve or the pressure switch needs attention.
The drain hose and its high loop
The drain hose needs to rise above the sink trap before it drops into the waste, so sink water can't run back into the dishwasher. When a machine has been fitted after the fact, that loop is sometimes missing. Signs are a stale smell, murky water in the base before you've used it, or water appearing in the dishwasher when the sink empties. Fixing the hose route is usually quick.
A new grinding noise
A grinding or rattling noise during the wash usually means something hard, such as a fruit pip or a chip of glass, has got past the filter into the wash pump. Stop the machine, lift the filter out and feel around the sump. If the noise carries on with the sump clear, the pump bearing may be wearing, and it's better replaced before it seizes and leaves you with a tub full of water.

Questions from Oak Flats
Why is my dishwasher not filling with water?
Check that the tap under the sink is fully open and the inlet hose hasn't been folded when the machine was pushed back. Old taps can seize part-way closed. If the supply is fine, the inlet valve or pressure switch may need replacing.
Why is there dirty water in my dishwasher before I use it?
Water from the sink can run back down the drain hose if the hose isn't looped up high enough. That happens where a dishwasher was added to an older kitchen. Rerouting the hose usually cures it.
How much does a dishwasher repair cost in Oak Flats?
The assessment is a fixed $125 for the callout and diagnosis, payable whether or not you proceed. Once the fault is found you get a price, and nothing is done until you agree to it. You can pay by card or spread it with Afterpay.
